Nigel North는 현존하는 일급 류트주자 중 한명으로서 국제적으로 연주, 교수, 음악사 연구가로서의 위치를 

확고하게 인정받고 있는 몇 안되는 인물 중 하나입니다.



그는 7세경부터 바이올린과 기타를 배웠고, 이후 고악에 흥미를 가져 류트와 그 관련악기군에 대한 전문

연주자로의 길을 선택하였다 합니다.



1975년 무렵부터 그는 류트와 early guitar의 연주 전문가로서 세상에 알려지기 시작하였는데, 그의 레파토리는

16세기의 작품에서 19세기의 근대 기타 레파토리까지 박식한 관련지식을 토대로 한 탄탄한 연주로 정평을 

얻고 있습니다.

Continuo player로서의 그의 실력 또한 상당한 것으로 주로 17세기 무렵의 성악과 류트를 위한 작품에서 그의 

연주는 높은 평가를 받고 있으며, 독주 류트를 위한 바이스와 바흐의 작품 연주는 세계 류트계의 최일급이라는

평가를 받고 있습니다.

연주가이자 음악학자인 그는 류트 연주가를 위한 continuo playing 지침서인 "Continuo Playing on the Lute,

Archlute and Theorbo"를 저술, 1987년 영국의 Faber 출판사를 통해 출간한 바 있으며 1985년에는 바흐의 

류트 작품 전곡을 런던의 Wigmore Hall에서 연주하여 반향을 일으키기도 했습니다.

또한 수년전부터는 17세기의 잊혀진 작품군을 발굴 연주하는 고악 연주단체인 Romanesca를 바이올린 주자

Andrew Manze, 하프시코드 주자 John Toll 등과 함께 결성하여 실내악 활동도 적극적으로 벌여 아르모니아 

문디에서 Vivaldi의 Manchester Sonata를 타이틀로 하는 2매조의 CD를 출시(1993)하기도 하는 등 매우 

정력적으로 고악의 연주활동을 진행하고 있습니다.

교육자로서 그는 1976년 이후 런던의 Guildhall School of Music and Drama에서 교편을 잡고 있으며, 

독일 베를린 소재의 Hochschule der Kunste의 교수로서 초빙, 활동하고 있기도 합니다.

그외에도 그는 Jerusalem Music Center, Insbruck Sommer Academy등에서 정기적으로 마스터클래스를 

개최하고 있으며 그의 클래스는 매우 자상하면서도 섬세한 것으로 정평을 얻고 있습니다.
