José Romanillos has established himself as one of the greatest luthiers of the twentieth century. His instruments have been played by Carlos Bonell, Antigoni Goni and Gilbert Biberian among many others. But the best known champion of these guitars is Julian Bream, who peformed on them almost exclusively for much of his career. This instrument was built in 1971, just two years before Bream's famous 1973 guitar. It has all the qualities of an exceptional guitar; a sweet and lyrical tone with excellent separation. The volume is excellent and yet it`s almost "noiseless" -- string noise and nail noise are absorbed and not amplified, allowing the notes themselves to sound unhindered. The influence of Hauser and Torres are evident here and the instrument has the feel and weight of an old-world, played-in traditional guitar. Condition is excellent, despite a repair that was done to the top in the uppermost area of the bass-side upper bout where a small piece of spruce was replaced. The tone of the instrument is fortunately unhindered, making this an excellent example of Romanillos' work from this period.
