What is "GRAN"?
It is the acronym for Guitar Russian Acoustically New; Invented in 1987 by two Russian musicians, Vladimir Ustinov and Anatoliy Olshanskiy. This is a new development in acoustical musical instruments (patent PCT - RU94 00265).

Due to the construction of the GRAN-guitar and thanks to modern materials it was possible to develop and even to improve Stradivarius' idea of the baroque guitar with different string levels. With GRAN a synthesis is achieved between the traditional classical guitar culture, and the folk and rock guitar traditions.

The GRAN-guitar has the standard six nylon strings, but also six light steel strings situated 2-3 millimeters beneath the nylon ones, so that the performer may, by varying his right hand position, play on the nylon strings only, the steel only, or on both simultaneously, creating a surprising variety of sounds and tonal colours.

GRAN received a very positive reaction and is seen as an instrument capable of playing many different musical styles, from baroque to classic and contemporary music, and also for jazz, folk and rock music. This guitar opens new horizons not only for guitarists, but also for musicians generally. The palette of complex timbres available through the mixture of nylon and metal strings, the wide variety of tonal colourations, and also the variety of tuning possibilities should be of great interest to composers and arrangers as well as creative guitarists. This instrument is both an acoustical and, more importantly, a musical enrichment.
