아일랜드 민요 -When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

케네디 가문은 아일랜드 이민 후손으로서 미국에서 대통령을 비롯해
주지사,상 하원 의원 등 수 많은 정치인을 배출한 명문가중에 하나지요,
에드워드 케네디의 사망으로 그 후세대에서는 이제 그 맥이 거의 다 되어
가는 듯 합니다. 조카들 중에서도 차기를 꿈꾸던 유망 정치인이 있었으나
여러 가지 스캔들로 인해 이제 몰락의 길을 걸어가고 있는 것으로 보입니다.
이번에 소개 하고자 하는 아일랜드 민요는 에드워드 케네디 상원의장(전)의
장례식장에서 마지막 순서로 역시 아일랜드 계의 테너 2인이 초대되어
이 노래를 부르는데 후렴 코러스 부분은 참석자 전체가 같이 합창을 합니다.
그만큼 많이 알려진 노래로 보이네요,

제가 모자라는 능력으로 번역을 시도하는 것이 사실은
쉽지 않고 또한 학교 졸업 이후 30 여 년 가까이 원서를 들고 공부를 해 본 것이 없으니
어휘는 다 까먹고 회화는 생존을 위해서 하는 것 이니 그럭저럭 통하는 정도지만
독해나 번역에는 사전 찾느라고 시간도 많이 걸리고 또한 그러는 과정에 요즈음
새로이 약간의 공부를 하는 셈입니다.
이곳에 오시는 분 들 중에 거의 네이티브 수준의 뛰어난 영어를 하시는 분들께서는
더 좋은 표현 혹은 번역 그리고 우리말도 시적으로 좀 더 다듬어 주실 분은
당분간 아일랜드 민요를 계속 올릴 계획이니
함께 힘을 모아 같이 배우면서 공부하는데도 도움이 되었으면 좋겠습니다.

아일랜드어에 남아 있는 옛 영어의 흔적인데 실제 발음은 현대 영어 같이 하더군요.

Sheet music cover"When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" is a lighthearted song in tribute to Ireland. Its lyrics were written by Chauncey Olcott and George Graff, Jr., set to music composed by Ernest Ball, for Olcott's production of The Isle O' Dreams, and Olcott sang the song in the show. It was first published in 1912, at a time when songs in tribute to a romanticized Ireland were very numerous and popular both in Britain and the United States. During the First World War the famous tenor John McCormack recorded the song.
The song continued to be a familiar standard for generations. Decades later it was used as the opening song on the radio show Duffy's Tavern. The song has been recorded on over 200 singles and albums and by many famous singers, including Bing Crosby, Connie Francis, and Roger Whittaker.[1]

[edit] The song in the newsThe song gained momentary notoriety in Canada after the so-called Shamrock Summit between Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and U.S. President Ronald Reagan held on St. Patrick's Day, 1985. At the end of the evening, the two leaders jointly performed "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling", for which Mulroney was extensively criticized in the Canadian press.[2]
