When you joined the great fallen in nineteen sixteen
I hope you died well and hope you died clean,
Or young Willie Mc Bride, was it slow and obscene

Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the dead-march as they lowered you down,
And did the play the last post and chorus
Did the pipes play the Flow,rs of the forest

And did you leave a wife or a  sweetheart behind
In some faithful heart is your memory behind
Although you died back in nineteen sixteen
In that faithful heart are you forever nineteen
Or are you a stranger without even a name
Enclosed and forever behind the glass frame
In a old photograph, torn and battered and stained
And fade to yellow in a brown lether frame.

The sun now it shines on the green fields of France
There,s a warm summer breeze, it makes the red poppies dance
And look how the sun shine from under the clouds
Ther,s no gas, no bared wire, there no guns firing now
But here in this graveyard it,s still no-man,s –land
The countless white crosses stand mute in the sand
The man,s blind indifference to his fellow man
To a whole generation that were butchered damned.

Now young Willie McBride I can,t help but wonder why
Do all those who lie here know why they died
And did they believe when they answered the cause
Did they really believe that this war would end wars
Well the sorrows, the surferring, the glory, the pain
The killing and dying was all done in vain
For young Willie McBride  it all happened again
And again, and again, and again, and again

내 그대의 무덤가 비석 옆에 않아도 않아 도 될까?
잠시 따뜻한 여름 태양아래 휴식을 취하고 싶네
하루 종일 걸어서 난 거의 지쳐 버렸네
자네의 묘비를 보니 1916년 대전에 참여하여 죽을 때 가
겨우 열 아홉 이였구먼
난 자네가 편안하게 그리고 깨끗이 죽었었기를 바라네
오 젊은 WillieMcBride 죽음이 지긋 지긋 했었던가?
그들이 죽음의 행진곡을 연주 하던가?
그들이 자네가 묻힐 때 마지막 코러스를 울리던가?
백파이프는 숲속의 꽃을 연주 하던가?



이 노래는 1차대전의 비극속에 젊은(어린) 나이에 사망한 이들을 기리며
한 노래 인데 가사가 워낙 길어서 전체 번역을 다 못 올립니다만(1절만 올렸습니다- 나머지 올려 주실분
                                                                                        손을 거들어 주시면 고맙겠습니다.)

마지막 절 가사에도 나오지만 역사속에서 늘 그래 왔듯이
권력자들의 결정에 의해 왜 젊은이들이 죽어야 하는가?
그들이 왜 죽어야만 했는지 알고 죽었는가 ?
이 전쟁이 끋나면 슬픔과 고통이 사라질것인가 ?
하지만 그러한 전쟁은 계속 일어났고 또 계속 되어  왔고, 끋없이....
(그 어떤 전쟁도 명분과 정당성은 만들어 지지 않은것이 없었을 것입니다.)
수많은 사람들이 아무런 의미 없이 허무하게 죽어야 했다는것을 한탄하고 있는듯 합니다.

그 어떤 결과를 위해서 수백만 수천만이 사라지고 처참한 결과가 남는
전쟁을 할 정당성이 과연 누구에게 있는가를 우리에게도 되 묻고 있는듯한 생각이 들기도 하여
처참한 전쟁의 모습을 보고도 예상하고도 누가 그렇게 나가자고 할수 있을지요???
