* Pedro Bacan

Pedro Peña Peña. Lebrija (Seville), 1951 - Utrera (Seville), 1997. Guitarist and singer. In Lebrija. Pedro was the most relevant member of the clan, not only as a guitarist, but also as the promoter of a movement to recover the art performed in his house and that of his relatives, which he lived from his childhood. With that objective in mind, he created and directed several theater shows, the players of which were mainly members of his family, many of whom had never been on stage. His sister Inés is an example. In this context one must place the recording Noches gitanas de Lebrija. The guitarist explained the philosophy of his art: "The truth of flamenco is held by the times. The natural evolution of flamenco does not consist of making a record every year. There are old recordings by Tomás Pavón doing a soleá from Cadiz, a new and natural soleá and not an intellectual evolution. Every one is crazy about the latest things, without thinking in the richness, nor that what makes flamenco different from all the music in the world is the feeling. The quality lies in the profundity. Seeking and complicating the melodic possibilities has never led to greater profundity or feeling. The families have gradually purified that music. The new people have less to do with the base, which is cante, and the singing families have been the base of all flamenco".

* Ines Bacan

The daughter of Bastián Bacán and Ana la del Pelao; sister of guitarist Pedro Bacán (deceased in 1997); great-granddaughter of Pinini; granddaughter of Fernanda la del Funi; cousin of Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera, El Lebrijano, El Turronero... Flamenco runs in Inés Bacán's family. And it is precisely in the family bosom, at the parties and gatherings, where for years the cantaora lets her voice be heard. It is not until 1990 when she takes the first step professionally upon taking part in the recording ‘Noches gitanas en Lebrija’, produced and directed by her brother Pedro Bacán. He is the one who pushes her to participate on later albums and shows which toured European and American stages such as ‘Nuestra historia al sur’ (1990), ‘Al son del 3x4’ (1992), ‘Cien años de cante’ (1993) by her cousin Pedro Peña, ‘El clan de los Pinini’ (1994)...

She soon records her first album, ‘De viva voz’ (Auvidis, 1995); and takes part in her brother's live show ‘Marisma’, recorded at Seville's Bienal de Flamenco in 1996. Following her mentor's death, she begins her solo career participating in festivals and peñas, collaborating on albums and shows. In 1998 she records her second album, ‘Soledad sonora’ (Auvidis, 1998), accompanied on guitar by Moraíto Chico. Five years later she releases ‘Pasión’, within the collection of the Palo Nuevo label. In the meantime, she offers remarkable recitals such as that of the 2003 Mont de Marsan Festival.
