이번에 소개할 편곡 악보는 당대 최고의 팝 가수 중 한사람인 영국의 작곡가 겸 가수 '로드 스튜어트(Rod Stewart)'의 'Sailing' 입니다.

그는 우리나라에서도 많은 팬을 확보하고 있는데 그는 높은 인기 만큼이나 시기와 질타를 한 몸에 받기도 하였는데 화려한 여성 편력에 따른 비난과 함께 상업성이 짙은 음악들의 연이은 발표로 동시대의 다른 가수들에게서도 많은 공격을 받았었던 그는 이러한 주위의 비난에도 불구하고 유행하는 음악 형식을 적극 수용하는 자세와 자신만의 독특한 목소리를 조합하여 수많은 히트 곡을 만들어 내었던 가수이기도 합니다.

 

그는 1962년 봄에 후일 '킨크스(The Kinks)'라는 이름으로 유명해지는 밴드인 '레이 데이비스 쿼텟(The Ray Davies Quartet)'에 리드 보컬로 가입하여 음악 활동을 시작하여, 1971년 5월에 발표된 세번째 음반 'Every Picture Tells a Story'에서 빌보드 싱글 차트와 영국 싱글 차트에서 1위를 차지한 곡인 'Maggie May'를 배출, 이 싱글의 성공에 힘입어 빌보드 앨범 차트에서도 처음으로 정상에 오르게 됩니다.


영, 미 양국의 앨범 차트를 석권한 음반 'Every Picture Tells a Story'으로 화려한 성공 시대를 열기 시작한 로드 스튜어트는 1975년 8월에 우리나라에서 가장 많은 사랑을 받았던 곡인 'Sailing'이 수록된 음반 'Atlantic Crossing'을 발표하여 영국 앨범 차트에서 네번 연속으로 1위 자리에 오르게 됩니다.

 

그의  최고의 전성기였던 1975년에 발표된 곡인 'Sailing'은 자유를 향한 고단한 항해를 노래하고 있는 곡으로 아마도 종교에서 기인한 내용이 아닌가 여겨지는 곡 입니다.
