이번에 소개할 편곡 악보는  5 - 60년대를 풍미했던 대표적인 경음악단 빌리본 오케스트라의 'Wheels / 언덕위의 포장마차' 입니다.

두 대의 색소폰을 한꺼번에 잘 부는 것이 그의 트레이드 마크였던 빌리본(Billy Vaughn,1919-1991)은 거의 독학으로 자신의 음악적 재능을 키워나갔으며,  고등학교 졸업 직후(1936.2.21) 켄터키 주 방위군 제123기병연대 소속 밴드(the 123rd Cavalry Regiment Band)에 들어간 것이 그의 음악 인생의 시작이었습니다.


그후 그는 합창단 결성, 레코드계로 들어가 편곡과 지휘자로 활약 하였습니다.

특히 그의  음악은 언제나 포근하게 다가와 평온한 느낌으로 이어지는데  바다와 멀리 떨어진 미국 켄터키 주 글래스고우(glasgow)가 그가 자란 곡이지만  빌리본 악단은 주로 바다, 항구, 배, 석양, 해변, 달빛, 별을 노래하였으며, 특히 어딘가로 떠나가고 떠나오는 공간인 항구를 주제로 한 곡에서 더 깊은 영감을 받았다고 하는데 그의 음악을 들으면 마구 어디론가 떠나고 싶은 마음이 들곤 하였습니다.


그 중 제가 좋아하던 곡 '석양에 붉은 돛 달고 (Red Sails in the Sunset)' 도 그런 종류의 곡 인듯 하네요.


이번에 소개하는 'Wheels'는 우리나라에서는 '언덕위의 포장마차'라는 제목으로  소개되었는데  그  당시 기타 매니아 들 사이에 인기가 상당하여 우리나라에서 가장 많이 팔인 악보 40위를 차지했다고 하네요.
