이번에 소개할 곡은 '베토벤'의 교향곡 9번 '합창'으로 알려진 'Odd to Joy(환희의 송가)' 입니다.


'Odd to Joy(환희의 송가)'는 독일의 시인인 '프리드리히 실러'가 1785년에 지은 송가 형식의 시로, 단결의 이상과 모든 인류의 우애를 찬양하는 내용을 담고 있는데  이 시는 '베토벤'이 1824년에 완성한 교향곡 9번 4악장의 가사로 사용된 시이기도 합니다.

'베토벤' 예술의 최고 절정을 이루고 있으며, 고금의 교향곡 중에서 가장 뛰어난 걸작품의 하나로 평가되는 9번 합창 교향곡은 '베토벤'이 20년이 넘는 기간동안작곡을 했으며 그 형식이나 내용에 있어서 고전주의의 완성이자 낭만주의 문을 여는 기가막힌 작품이라 평을 받고 있는 작품 입니다..


특히 4악장에 합창을 넣은 것은 '베토벤'이 사람의 목소리까지 넣은 모든 악기를 동원한 조화의 걸작이라 할 수 있으며,  또한  4악장에서 그 핵심주제를 하느님께 대한 신앙, 인류의 평화, 만물의 조화로 풀어내고 있는 말로 표현하기 힘든 걸작 중의 걸작이라 평하고 싶습니다.


'베토벤'이 항상 공감하고 애독했던 독일의 위대한 시인 '프리드리히 실러(Fridrich Schillers)'의 장시 <환희의 노래> 에 의한 합창 붙임을 가진 교향곡이며, 네 사람의 독창과 대합창이 교향곡에 사용된 최초의 음악이기도 합니다.


이 곡을 작곡할 때 '베토벤'은 완전히 귀머거리가 되어 음향의 세계와 단절된 상태에서 무한한 고통과 싸워야 했 고, 육체적인 건강의 악화와 가난 때문에 그의 생활은 말이 아니었다.


그러한 환경에서 그는 고뇌를 맛본 환희를 영원히 노래 부르고 음으로써 표현하므로서 예술에 의해 인간의 고난을 극복했으며 역경에 놓일수록 그것을 이겨나가는 초인적인 힘을 발휘했던 것이라 생각 합니다.


이번 편곡은 합창 부분의 멜로디만 보면 단순하다는 느낌을 극복하기 위해 교향곡 멜로디 일부을 같이 넣어 편곡 하였습니다.
