이번에 소개할 편곡 악보는 '헨델'의 'Lascia ch'io pianga ( 울게 하소서 )' 입니다.


이 곡을 작곡한 '헨델 (Georg Friedrich Handel, 1685~1759)'은 독일에서 태어나 이탈리아에서 공부하고 영국에 가서 크게 성공하여 영국에 귀화한 바로크시대의 작곡가로  주로 그당시 유럽에 크게 유행했던 이탈리아 가극과 오라토리오, 칸타타 등을 작곡했습니다.


그의 노래는 대부분 '카스트라토(Castrator)'를 위한 곡들이 많아 '카스트라토'가 사라지게 되면서 사장되었다가 2차 세계대전 이후 작곡 당시의 연주양식을 되살린다는 원전연주가 유행하면서 다시 부흥하게 되었고 바흐와 더불어 바로크 시대를 대표하는 작곡가로 손꼽힙니다.


이번에 소개하는 오페라 '리날도(Rinaldo)' 중 아리아 '울게하소서'는 영화 '파리넬리'를 통해서 더욱 유명해졌는데 '파리넬리'는 당시에 가장 유명했던 '카스트라토'로서 실제로 헨델은 그를 염두에 두고 이 곡을 작곡했다고 합니다.

카스트라토(Castrator) 란? 


라틴어의 동사 castrare(거세하다)에서 나온 말이며 변성기 전의 소년을 거세하면 성인이 된 후에도 소프라노나 알토의 성역을 지니게 되는데, 음질적으로도 소년이나 성인 여성에 비해 씩씩하고 순수하며 또 음역도 훨씬 넓게 됩니다.


그래서 16세기 이후 가톨릭성당에서 많이 쓰였으며 17∼18세기의 이탈리아오페라에서도 많이 쓰였습니다.


그 후 성당에서는 이와 같은 비인간적인 행위를 금지시켰으며 오페라에서도 19세기 이후는 거의 찾아볼 수 없게 되었습니다.


오늘날의 '카운터테너'는 '카스트라토'와는 다르며 가성(팔세토)을 구사하는 남성가수를 가리킵니다.
