원래 이 노래는 1964 년에 "Hier Encore" (only yesterday) 라는 샹송으로
Charles Aznavour 가 발표 햇고.
1969년 미국의 칸튜리 싱거 Roy Clark 이 불러 크게 힛트했습니다
더 유명해진건, 1995년 미국 전설의 야구 선수 Mickey Mantle 이 자기가 죽으면
장례식에서 Roy Clark보고 이 노래를 불러달라고 한것이 큰 뉴스꺼리엿으며
정말로 장례식에서 이 노래를 불럿답니다.

Yesterday, when I was young,
The taste of life was sweet, as rain upon my tongue,
I teased at life, as if it were a foolish game,
The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame

The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned,
I always built to last on weak and shifting sand,
I lived by night and shunned, and the naked light of day,
And only now, I see, how the years had ran away

Yesterday, when I was young,
So many happy songs were waiting to be sung,
So many wild pleasures lay in store for me,
And so much pain, my dazzled eyes refused to see

I ran so fast that time, and youth at last ran out,
I never stopped to think, what life, was all about,
And every conversation, I can now recall,
Concerned itself with me, and nothing else at all

Yesterday, the moon was blue,
And every crazy day, brought something new to do,
I used my magic age, as if it were a wand,
And never saw the waste, and emptiness beyond

The game of love I played, with arrogance and pride,
And every flame I lit, so quickly, quickly died,
The friends I made, all seemed somehow to drift away,
And only I am left, on stage to end the play

There are so many songs in me, that won't be sung,
I feel the bitter taste, of tears upon my tongue,
Time has come for me to pay,
For yesterday, when I was young
 
 

내가 젊었을 때 인생이란 내 혀 끝에 닿는
빗물마저 달콤한 맛 같았는데
어리석은 장난처럼 애태웠던 추억만이
밤 바람에 나부끼는 촛불처럼 아롱거리네
 
세일 수 없이 많은 꿈을 꾸었고
장대한 계획을 세웠었건만, 어쩌랴,
항상 헛 수고 만 되었을 뿐
한낮의 밝은 빛을 멀리하고
환락의 밤만을 위해 살던 나 지금에 와서 생각하니
세월만 덧없이 흘렀네 
내가 젊었을 때
끝도 없이 마시며 노래하며 즐겼고
오직 유흥만이 인생의 전부인 것으로 알고 즐겼지
하지만 지금은 내 현혹된 눈으로
차마 볼 수 없는 고통만이 남는 걸

시절과 젊음은 결국 그렇게도 빨리 보내버렸으니
인생이 그런 것이란 생각을 떨칠 줄 모르고
이제 와서 되돌려 보려 온갖 몸부림을 쳐보지만
결국은 나 자신 뿐, 아무도 남는 건 없느니

지난 날 푸른 달빛따라
유흥으로 지새던 나날들이
내게는 새로움도 가져왔지만
지금 생각하니 꿈만같았던 내 지난 인생이
낭비와 무의미한 공허의 피안을 맴돌고 있네

사랑 놀이에만 정신이 팔렸고 
오만하고 자만심으로 거드름 피우던 
열정도 아주 빨리 시들어졌네
사귀던 친구들도 다들 떠나고 
막내린 무대에 홀로 남은 쓸쓸함만 남았네

수 많은 노래가 있지만 부를 수 없었고 
혀 끝에 떨어지는 눈물은 이제 쓰디쓰게만 느껴지네
나에게 지금은 지난 젊은 시절을
보상해야 할 시간이라네
