Ferran Savall

Amelias Testament

Ferran Savall-El Testament d´Amelia (Amelias Testament)
Tradicional Catalana
Arranjament: Ferran Savall
Ferran Savall: Veu i Guitarra
Mario Mas: Guitarra

N´Amèlia està malalta,
la filla del bon rei,
comtes la´n van a veure,
comtes i noble gent.

Ai! que el meu cor se'm nua
com un pom de clavells.

English:
The good king´s daughter
Amelia is ill.
Counts and nobles
go to see her.

Alas! My heart is laid bare,
like a posy of carnations.

Some versions of this Catalan folk song locate the action of the events described in the castle of Bellaguarda, in Roussillon.
It´s protagonist, Amelia, could be the daughter of Ramon Berenguer III (1097-1131), the count-king of Catalonia, and Douce of Provence, although according to some versions Amelia is the daughter of the French king.
With its melancholy, sombre tune, the song appealed to feelings of justice and sympathy for the ailing Amelia, while also having an elevated, poetic quality, as witnessed by the beautiful line of the refrain.
